Ellie Hill: “Watering Down” And “Smartening Up” In The Workplace

Are you feeling burnt out because you feel you are losing touch with your roots or are you a victim of unsavory coworkers and the culture of your office?

Ellie Hill calls this “watering down” or “smartening up” in her new ebook and upcoming digital-only documentary, “Welcome To A Mean Girl World” (available today). Hill’s thriller, “Like Thunder,” will be released on Feb. 14th. For more information about Hill, she wrote an executive summary for us.

I recently interviewed Hill and shared some tips with Eileen Ryan on “The E.R.” You can hear them together at approximately 40:45 in the podcast below:

“When you enter a scary situation, like a corporate environment, knowing what you’re facing and expecting will help guide you.”

Where do you start to get involved with others around you?

“Being involved is taking action. What you do can always become contagious so it becomes about doing, not talking. Trust, work hard and stand up for yourself. People will trust you more for taking action over making a lot of noise.”

When someone started making the tea smelling like the girl next door, what should you have done?

“If you are in a job that is passive, think about what you are going to do next. How are you going to move from passive to active? There is no cookie cutter way to actually move. Something that worked for a few people will not work for you.”

Listen: How Is The Workplace Changing?

Remember that, eventually, your fear and cynicism will fade away.

“The more you acknowledge that your fear will fade, you will move from being a self-saboteur to a leader of yourself. And then you can really stand up and go on with your life and move from making noise to actually making noise that can change lives.”

Your role as a boss and employee is a mirror to your life and that means you are responsible for turning your temper into a “feast” of creating opportunities in a world that only creates a pressure cooker.

“Whether you are a boss or employee, in everything you do, you are a mirror and you mirror what you are surrounded by. When you are surrounded by negativity and pressure, you feel under pressure too. You need to learn the art of choosing a quiet and good time, after the first few waves of negativity, to make a choice of who you are going to be and who you are not.”
