Cambridge police investigating second homicide in two weeks

The attack occurred on North Avenue Extension at around 10:10pm on Thursday, just a few blocks from the university’s Frederick Douglass Riverfront Center, which houses the school’s forensic pathology, anatomy, and medical student units, CBS Boston reports. University police and Boston police were initially called to the scene, but university police on scene soon informed them that the victim was a man from Cambridge. He had been stabbed in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for identification.

The incident comes after 16 people were wounded and two others were killed in a shooting in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Friday.

UPDATE (5:45 p.m. EST): A student from a different college tells Tech Insider that this is the first he has heard of this kind of incident in Cambridge.

“It is extremely rare that I would even be alerted to something like this,” he says. “My freshman class was split pretty evenly between freshmen, juniors, and seniors, so I know that there would not be a lot of familiarity. This [involved] a student not from my high school.”

Original story (1:44 p.m. EST): Cambridge, Massachusetts police responded to a report of a stabbing at approximately 10:10pm on Thursday.

The victim’s injuries are unknown at this time, according to ABC News.

Massachusetts State Police provided the following statement to Tech Insider on Friday:

State Police Communication Center Massachusetts State Police dispatch had received a report of a stabbing at the intersection of North Avenue Extension and Hellenic Street. Specialized units from Boston Police and Cambridge Police are responding to the scene.

Cambridge police also told ABC:

This is an ongoing investigation and we ask that you be patient while we work to gather facts. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

This is the third homicide in Cambridge in less than two weeks. On Saturday, Cambridge police responded to the scene of a fatal shooting in the 100 block of Canal St. on Friday.
